Basketball

Broomball

Programs, often available through local broomball clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy broomball, a variation on ice hockey which is played indoors on an ice hockey rink or outdoors on a frozen pond in which players wearing special padded sponge rubber shoes attempt to put an air-filled ball about six inches in diameter into the opposing net using brooms made of corn straw dipped in rubber or moulded rubber. Broomball clubs are often organized into leagues which play one another in tournaments.

Curling

Programs, often available through local curling clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy curling, a game in which two teams of four players slide curling stones over a stretch of ice toward a target circle. Members of a team use brooms to sweep the surface of the ice in the path of the stone to control its speed and direction. Curling clubs are often organized into leagues and play one another in tournaments called bonspiels.

Football

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy football. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team, and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Hockey

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy hockey, a game in which two teams attempt to score by knocking a ball or puck toward opposite goals using sticks that are curved or hooked at the end. Hockey can be played on ice, pavement or a field.

Lacrosse

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy lacrosse, a game in which players use a long-handled stick that has a triangular head with a mesh pouch for catching, carrying, and throwing the ball. Divisions within the sport include men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, indoor lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse, each with variations on rules, field type, gender and equipment. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy ringette, an ice sport of Canadian origin in which players on each team use a straight stick to pass, carry and shoot a rubber ring to score goals.

Rugby

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy rugby, a game similar to football in which play is continuous without time-outs or substitutions which features kicking, dribbling, lateral passing, and tackling but no forward passing. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team, and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Access to a rugby field and necessary equipment, uniforms, if necessary, and referees for games may also be available.

Soccer

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy soccer, a game played on a field between two teams of 11 players with the objective of propelling a round ball into the opponent's goal by kicking or by hitting it with any part of the body except the hands and arms. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team, and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Access to a soccer field and necessary equipment, uniforms, if necessary, and referees for games may also be available.

Softball

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy softball, a game like baseball that is played on a small diamond using a somewhat larger ball that is pitched underhand. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team, and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams, that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Access to a softball field and necessary equipment, uniforms, if necessary, and referees for games may also be available. Softball also has a number of variations, such as fastball, slow-pitch, modified pitch, lob ball and 3-pitch, all of which use slightly different types of balls and different ways of delivering pitches.

Volleyball

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy indoor, grass and/or beach volleyball, a game in which an inflated ball is volleyed over a net. The programs may provide coaching assistance and access to necessary equipment and facilities; and may sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in volleyball competitions and provide officials for the games. League play may also be available and is usually organized according to ability level.
