Description and Services
Description (Service) The purpose of this program is to work with high risk expectant mothers while they are pregnant and for a short period after the baby is born. During the involvement with the mother-to-be, one program goal is to get the mother/family linked with other community programs (ie. Healthy Babies, Healthy Children, Early Year’s Centre, etc.).
The emphasis of this program is to provide families with education, using a high degree of engagement and support to the parent(s) and a focus on developing a trusting, helping relationship.
During Pregnancy:
The program will help the mother/family prepare for the upcoming birth, connect the mother with appropriate prenatal services, assist her with medical appointments and help establish or make clearer the other services she will have available when she gives birth (ie. Healthy Babies Program). The program will help the mother obtain the appropriate necessities and supplies needed for her baby; transport her to appointments/community groups as necessary; or any other tasks that may be required.
If the mother knows that she will be unable to care for her baby after birth, then the program will help her explore other options including kinship or adoption for the child. Care will be taken to ensure that the Helping Hands Program establishes a relationship with the mother to ensure that she understands her options and feels supported in her decision.
After the baby is born:
Once the child is born, the Helping Hands Program will focus on supporting the connection to other service providers, offering support including helping to ensure the child attends required medical appointments and ensuring the mother has the adequate supports in the early transition stage. The Helping Hands Worker will remain involved with the family for up to two months after the birth of the baby
