Description (Service) | Daily Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill and the mounting of Sentries at Rideau Hall and the National War Memorial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Prior to the Public Duties season commencing, the Ceremonial Guard is inspected by the Governor General of Canada. The Governor General is the Colonel of the Guards Regiments: Governor Generals Foot Guards (GGFG), Canadian Grenadier Guards (CGG) from Montreal and the Governor Generals Horse Guards (GGHG) from Toronto, and as such, inspects the Ceremonial Guard to ensure that Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, Guardsmen and Musicians, are prepared to conduct Public Duties. The Ceremonial Guard is made up of members of the Canadian Armed Forces: The Royal Canadian Navy, The Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Members employed with the Ceremonial Guard wear the uniform of one of the Foot Guards Regiments (GGFG & CGG). On our nation's birthday, July 1st, the Ceremonial Guard traditionally mounts the noon hour Guard of Honour on Parliament Hill. The Changing of the Guard Ceremony on Canada Day is at 9:30 am and not 10 am; please note that this is subject to change on this day only. In July, the Ceremonial Guard hosts several Brass and Reed Bands and Pipes and Drums in the Annual Beating Retreat Ceremony "Fortissimo". In past years, more than 300 Musicians and Soldiers have participated in a display of military music and drill. |
