Description (Service) | A non-partisan independent agency responsible for conducting federal general elections, by-elections and referendums. Administration of electoral legislation * registering political parties and third parties engaged in election advertising, as well as electoral district associations, leadership contestants and nomination contestants of registered parties * maintenance of the National Register of Electors * appointing and instructing returning officers * disclosing contributions to candidates, political parties, and to electoral district associations, leadership contestants and nominations contestants of registered parties * examining and disclosing their financial returns * reimbursing expenses to candidates and parties. Ensuring access to the system for all eligible citizens: physical facilities * public education * information programs. Providing legal * technical * financial * administrative support to independent commissions responsible for readjusting federal electoral district boundaries |

Application | Most electors are registered in the National Register of Electors, used to produce the preliminary voters lists * eligible people can call to confirm if they are registered * electors not listed in the National Register of Electors must provide: One piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, that contains a photograph of the elector and his or her name and address (such as a driver's license); or two pieces of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer each of which establish the elector’s name and at least one of which establishes the elector’s residence * a comprehensive list of all the accepted identification options and documents is available online. Registration can be done online through the Online Registration Service, in person at any local Elections Canada office until the Tuesday before election day, 6 p.m; or at the polls on election day or advance polling days. |
