Description (Service) | Responsible for decision making processes regarding the release of offenders from incarceration, other than by normal expiration of sentence * authorized to consider, for parole or unescorted temporary absences of 72 hours or longer, adult offenders who are serving sentences of less than two years in provincial institutions * conditions for release and parole or temporary absence may be revoked for non-compliance with these conditions Receives and manages demands from the public to observe parole hearings Victims of crime may submit information for consideration by the Board in making its decisions. This may be done in writing, by phone, or in person at the parole hearing |

Eligibility | Inmates serving sentences of 6 months or more are automatically considered for parole unless the inmate waives, in writing, the right to a hearing. Inmates serving sentences of less than 6 months may apply, in writing, for parole consideration. Inmates may be released on parole after having served 1/3 of the total sentence. Inmates may apply for early consideration where compelling/exceptional circumstances exist. Observers of a parole hearing must be 18 years and older with a completed security clearance. |
Application | Review of the Board’s decision: offender may request by writing to the Chair. The Chair or designate may uphold the original decision or order a new hearing. Complaint against the Board or its hearing processes: may be investigated by the Ombudsman or the Ontario Human Rights Commission at the offender's request. To become an observer at a parole hearing: bring the form, available online, to the local Regional Office of the Board a minimum of ten working days prior to the hearing.
